IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are here to report a copyright problem with one of my images, it's probably because I forgot to add GFDL-self tag to it. Rather than clutter this page, and create unnecessary delays by sending me notices I will probably not receive for many days, go right ahead and add the tag yourself. Question

[edit]

I love the photo of your Barred Owl. I see on wikemedia that it is free for public use, however, out of respect I would like either your written permission or to be able to purchase the required copy right from you please. How do I get hold of you to do this? properly.

Update- March 5 2013, I am an artist interested in the same photograph. I also saw that it is free for use - but to be safe I'd love to hear from you. I'm interested in remixing and selling it.. I would be happy to show you what I've done and pay you a share of my sales. Please contact me through my website! Blessings! Ryanbcurtis.com

I'll also use this space to thank you, Mdf, for your contributions. I would be going to congratulate you on having done such works, but I think to thank you is more appropriate for sharing your care and talent with the world. Hi, there is a problem with your Image:Strix-varia-005.jpg when viewed at full resolution. Maybe you will have to re-upload? Lycaon 22:10, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image is large by Wikipedia standards. And it appears to be a "finalist" -- I honestly do not track this kind of thing -- which means it is probably getting more than its usual amount of exposure to the outside world. I'm guessing that to throttle the bandwidth one of the sysadmins has taken it down temporarily. This happened when the image was on the main page of the English Wikipedia a few weeks ago. I suggest patience. But if there is indeed a problem, let me know again and I'll happily re-upload it. Mdf 22:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VisibleEarth Projections please halp!

[edit]

Dear Mdf,

I'm an architect currently looking for a digital version of either the buckminster fuller earth satellite map ( dymaxion world ), or the Goode Homolsine projection world map based on satelite image, or the world map based on satelite image. My pourpouse is to print it out at a very large format ( 5.50 mt width), so i need a very good quality raster or vectorial digital map. I have been looking for it through out the net, but with no results, so i really hope you can help me. I sow your Goode-Homolosine projection on Wikipedia at [1]( ElectionWorld told me about you ), it is wonderful. Also I sow on your page other very interesting projection you are able to execute...

> Are these projectio available in good digital quality as to print out as I need ? Or is it possible to produce these in best quality ? I really hope you to halp me

>I found a satellite image on visibleearth.nasa.gov, it is available as TIFF 21600 x 21600 pixels (173,5 MB or 240,1 MB or 400,7 MB ). Do you think we can transform this image in Goode Homolosine or Dimaxion projection ?

>Are you able ( or someone you know ) to execute these transformations for me ( from satellite image to Goode-Homolosine or to Dymaxion map )? >How much does it would cost to me?

You can look a sample of Dymaxion map i'm tolking about at [2] If you are not able to help me please let me know which other sources could be useful to me.

thanks a lot and kind regards.

Sorry for the delay, but I've uploaded one. The latitude limits here are +-80 degrees; you can chop off parts of Antarctica (as may be traditional), or I can re-render it per request.
Normally I would notify User:Yug in person (as it were), but it is not entirely clear if you are that editor, as he seems to have departed this project sometime last year. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Unlicenced use of your photo

[edit]

Hi Mdf. Regarding Image:Cyanocitta-cristata-004.jpg, which you licenced as GFDL, I wanted to let you know that I recently came across this, which fails to provide attribution for your image (and likely, many hundreds more). I'm not sure if you care about such things, but figured you should be made aware of this. (I'm still reading Commons:Licensing, but unfortunately issues covered there are copyvio images uploaded to Commons, not those taken from Commons). Mindmatrix 00:17, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is another one: http://article.wn.com/view/2008/04/21/Thousands_of_seedlings_may_save_songbird/, wn.com or it's parent company displays.com seems to be in the business to take gfdl-licensed images off wikipedia and re-aggregate them under their copyright. They do take them offline once contacted but refuse to do this in general for GFDL licensed content... Wwcsig 21:26, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike the first one, this one credits "mdf" ... which is really about all they can do, though a back-reference to the Commons would be nice. Anyways, like most normal people, I do not have an IP lawyer on retainer, so as much as I might like crushing them -- cue the Perry Mason theme -- it's not really cost effective for me. I accept Philip Greenspun's advice at http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/images, under the section "A Personal Approach to Copyright". He writes "I decided to focus my energy on creating new works and not lose sleep over piracy of the old ones." Well, why not? I like sleep.
This may not be for everyone though. If this is a wider issue for the larger population of photographers and other content creators here, I'd suggest a formal mechanism similar to Greenspun's "Internet Hall of Shame" (http://philip.greenspun.com/copyright/hall-of-shame). Given Wikipedia/Commons/etc's high profile, such a list would probably have more power than the individual contributors. Mdf 04:57, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
With regard to the credit, you are certainly right. This is one of their obligations for publishing a GFDL licensed image and the only one they fulfill. They do not provide the original (or a back link to wikimedia), they do not provide the GFDL text on their server (but I see they started linking to Gnu recently) and they claim copyright for their aggregations and do not publish their content under the GFDL or a equivalent license. If the image was CC-by-licensed they'd be doing the right thing but the GFDL is trying to convince publishers to give back to the community if they take content from it. That model however is apparently not displays.com's business model. Then again - your 'I like sleep' model has a certain attractiveness as well... Wwcsig 17:58, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting permission to use Hairy Woodpecker (male and female) pictures

[edit]

Hello Mdf.

I just found your great pictures of Hairy Woodpeckers and am wondering if I can have permission to use them in a project my class has put together. I don't completely understand the license they're published under and I wanted to get permission to use them in case you're not cool with it.

The project can be found at: urbanbirdsounds.org Your pics (if you are comfortable with us using them) would be used on the website and in a small booklet that we're putting out with a CD (which will be give out for free to other schools/students). If you're interested we could definitely send you a copy too! Also, if this doesn't sound like something you're interested in, no worries.

I have no idea who to check back into this and see if you responded but my email is rb13@cornell.edu If you are comfortable with us using them, please let me know how you would like to be credited and whether you would like your name to link to a website of your other work.

Thanks for your help --and for the great pics. Looking forward to hearing from you. All the best, Regan

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Picture of birds from Tropical rainforest

[edit]

Dear Mdf,

I work for the french Museum of natural history. We are updating the multimedia devices in the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution and one of this device treats about the rainforest of South America. I'm looking for pictures and found your pictures of birds on Wikimedia.

There are some stuffed specimens in the Gallery which represent the rainforest, and for every specimen we would like to show a picture of the animal in his natural area (picture attached). This is a non-commercial use, our purpose is to show how rainforests are threatened by human activities.

Do you agree if we use your pictures in this device ? Of course your name will appear in the device.

We would be very pleased to invite you at the Grande galerie if you go to Paris once a time.

Thank you,

Best regards,

Ingrid Verleye

Amazing

[edit]

Your pictures of birds are nothing short of brilliant. Why you decided to give them away for free, and not sell them, I do not know. You must either have a screw loose or be exceedingly generous, or perhaps both... I've no idea how you captured the hummingbird so well. I cannot praise you photography skills enough. Thank you, they are a gift to the world. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 01:38, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cartographic projections

[edit]

Hi. I really like your images of cartographic projections. Is there a way I could learn how to make them myself or do they require some special, complicated software? --Hispalois (talk) 21:35, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request Permission to Use Photo as Reference for Painting

[edit]

Your photos of birds are just beautiful! I've been reading the copyright info pages and am not quite clear on some of the info. I wonder if you'd give me permission to use your photo of the blue jay in the snow as a reference for a watercolor painting. Since my painting wouldn't be in electronic form or published to the internet, I'm not sure how to do the attribution, or if the GFDL or CC-BY-SA are meant to be applied to non-electronic formats. Please let me know if you'd give me permission for a painting and if so, how you'd like it to be attributed. I'd appreciate it if you could reply to this request with an email to cinsley@msn.com. A famous french supermarket uses your picture on handkerchiefs packagings!

[edit]

Hello and congrats for your excellent work,

I just wanted to inform you, since you may not know this, that to my astonishment, I have recognized today one of your most famous pictures, the winter's blue jay (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cyanocitta-cristata-004.jpg) on a handkerchief box/layout sold nationwide by the french supermarket corporation "LEADER PRICE". The brand of the handkerchiefs featuring your picture goes by the same name, and only mentions: "48 mouchoirs blancs" ("48 white handkerchiefs"). I don't know what to do, else than report it to you: since one of the GNU Licensing requirements are, as far as I know, that there may be free to distribute but that you always have to mention the credits and/or the author: of course, nothing is written on the packaging.

Well... that's it!

Keep up the good work (and happy new year btw!) 82.67.23.105 12:33, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Bodhis[reply]

Hi Mdf, how are you? In the spanish article es:Discusión:Tyrannus melancholicus a girl has doubt about the identification of the bird of this photo. She says that the bird is Tyrannus verticalis because the white lines in the sides of the tail. I don't know too much about tropical birds, so is she right?. Thanks in advance. --Erfil (talk) 11:54, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The picture was taken during the Panamanian winter, so it is possible that I stumbled onto a Western Kingbird (verticalis) in the midst of the usual Tropical's (melancholicus). However, the white in the tail here appears to be more of an artifact of lighting than an actual feature on the bird. Compare the tail here to the image at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/ifwis/ibt/site.aspx?id=se26. However, it may be prudent to locate An Expert here to make sure, as I've had only limited exposure to both species. Mdf (talk) 03:10, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another Need for Mercator Projections

[edit]

Dear Mdf,

Would it be possible for you to make a 5120 pixel wide Mercator projection of both NASA’s Blue Marble and Earth’s City Lights? Alternatively, if you use a standard tool that I can purchase, I won’t have to bother you with it.

Many thanks in advance, Joachim

Reuse credit line

Hi Mdf... I hope you are well. There has been a question on OTRS regarding how to reuse one of your photos in a book (I believe they are referring to File:Corvus-brachyrhynchos-001.jpg). I have, of course, told them how to do this correctly, as well as pointed them to you... in case they don't drop by, do you have a requested attribution? just "Mdf"? Permission for one-time use of photo image.....

[edit]

I have found one of your images of the cerulean warbler on wikipedia.org that I would like to obtain permission to use in a local Audubon Society chapter brochure that educates the public about the importance of shade-grown coffee and the habitat conservation for migratory birds between their routes in Central America and western North Carolina. I find that your image of the cerulean warbler to be one of the best that I have found. Evn though many of the local Audubon members have taken photos, non exist of the cerulean warbler in the files, hence, I would appreciate the use of the image for a rack-card, banner, and decal-sticker, whcih will be given away free to members of the public for education purposes and will not be for sale in any way.
