Use of your pics

[edit]

Hi Benh,

I'm working on a blog just now with tips and advice about taking photographs of Paris. I was hoping to use two of your superb pics on it-your night shots of the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe. Would you please let me know if this would be OK as long as the photographs are credited to yourself? You can contact me at: bruce.robbins at homecall.co.uk

Re: London Eye at night

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for your comment on my picture. You said that the picture has a "Lack of sharpness and visible noise due to wrong settings used (f/3.5 and iso 400)." Could you expand on that statement please? What settings should I have used? I'm guessing that I should have used a longer exposure and lower ISO, but am puzzled by the comment about the aperture. I'm still learning how to use my camera, and I'd welcome any suggestions on how I can improve my photos. Thanks again. Mike Peel 19:02, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. Don't worry about harshness; as long as it's constructive, I don't mind.
I was using a tripod, but not a brilliant one. The reason I didn't take a longer shot, or use a higher aperture value, was because the London Eye was spinning, which meant that it would have gotten blurred. That might not have been a bad thing, though... At the time, I was trying to do HDR images, but the spinning meant that that didn't work.
Thanks for the comment about the aperture size relating to DOF; I'd forgotten that, and will bear that in mind with future photos.
Thanks again. Mike Peel 22:59, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merci d'avance...

Gonioul 18:36, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hej Benh,

first of all a great compliment for your amazing photos! In my view the most amazing photo is the panorama of Paris by night. I am so amazed by it that I would like to print it and hang in my room. So what I want to ask is whether you have a version of this photo with a higher resolution in order to improve the printing quality.

possible interesting picture to take for wikipedia

[edit]

Salut Benh, I recently read three Emile Zola novels. From further reading I guess the area from L'Assommoir is not necessarily a recommended tourist attraction. However, I think it would be very interesting to see some photos of the old buildings around Rue de la Goutte d'Or.

I have visited some photojournalist websites which show some areas with immigration issues - is the old setting for Zola's novel one of these areas?

FPC on the English Wikipedia

[edit]

Just wanted to let you know I nominated your Palais Garnier photo. :-) Diliff 20:11, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I know what you mean about not being able to use a tripod, it can be quite frustrating. This one is quite similar (although I think yours is much better). I had to reach really far forward over the balcony because the pillars obscured the wide view, so it made it hard to keep the camera still and avoid parallax errors. Also the dynamic range was very difficult to contain and I think the shadows suffered as a result. As an even more extreme example of the same thing, this one was taken hand held at ISO800 and f/1.8 as tripods were not allowed. As a result it is really a bit too dark, and even as it is, I had to brighten it a lot which created a lot of noise but because it was 20 individual photos, I downsampled it so far that noise is not really visible. But you should see the original RAW files! The quality is awful.
If you don't mind me asking, how come your english is so good? It seems far better than the average frenchman. ;-) I'm guessing from your name that you're Vietnamese? Diliff 11:14, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

400D focus problems

[edit]

Hello Benh,

i read that you had/have problems with your 400D. I have a 350D and also had such problems. But i could never really identify the real problem...because often the focus was perfect. What i found out is that the light situation is very important for a good focusing. Additionally in problematic (light-) situations you should use the center focus point as this is the most accurate one. I recently bought the 40D and I have to say that focusing problems nearly don't exist anymore. But of course it is a more expensive camera and i had to safe money for quite some time to buy it :) ...but it is worth it.

But what i want to say is that there is not necessarily sth wrong with your equipment. It can also be that simply the situation was problematic for the camera to handle. But I know those things can make you crazy as you never know if sth is wrong or not. Don't give up! :-) Greetings --AngMoKio 06:47, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Measuring emotions in pixels?

[edit]

"What emotions could convey a couple dozens of pixels ?" Benh 06:45, 22 August 2008 (UTC). See, Benh, I'm quoting you already. Now I'd like to let you know that I believe emotions cannot be measured in pixels. Remember emotions were around since the beginning of the time much before pixels have arrived? One more thing. I responded your comment on the image delisting page. I'm not sure you read it, so I'd like to repeat it on your own talk page:
"It is getting increasingly hard to follow your thoughts, but I still would like to give you a good advise: please, if you could, before making a statement, and I mean any statement, try to give it another thought. For instance to justify the reason for delisting of the image you wrote: "Delist Not very useful at this size". I went to the image page and hit "Check usage" button. Here's what I got: "Evstafiev-bosnia-cello.jpg is used on at least 192 pages in 28 projects." Is the image really not very useful? Is any of your high resolution images is at least half as useful as this one?"
And now the image is used on one more page - your own talk page, Benh.--Sensl (talk) 18:14, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Dear Mila --let's call you Mila, I like to name things and people--, I read the page, but did not reply because we can debate about this endlessly. To me, a small image doesn't convey emotions, it leaves room to imagination. That's my opinion. But it seems the community agree with you, since the picture has kept its FP status, and that's the decision we all have to agree with now. Like I once read (from Michael Maggs ?) I believe the system is good and that FP are most of the time worth their status, unlike what happens sometimes on QI. I haven't checked for VI yet. Talking about this, Image:Evstafiev-bosnia-cello.jpg image is to me a fine example of VI and not FPC. Now you're right when you raise the usage issue (though many of the 192 pages are actually userpages), but should this picture be used on some other medium than a webpage, it may not be as useful. And to answer your last question, I have at least one image which is more used than this, but who cares ? Benh (talk) 22:48, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, you cannot call me "Mila". I am not mbz, and that is going to be proved by stupid and unlawful (against Common policies) check user your friends requested. I spent few months in France and I know Frenchmen often say: "Cherchez la femme" . It does not work in this situation. I've advised you already to give it another thought before making a statement. In other words like it was said: "Ce n'est pas assez d'avoir l'esprit bon, mais le principal est de l'appliquer bien." I do care about the usage of your images, and I'm glad they used on many pages.--Sensl (talk) 17:17, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FPC

I've nominated your panorama of Marseille as a FPC. --Massimo Catarinella (talk) 15:31, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Question Did you make this picture with a borrowed lens? Cause, refering to your description, you dont own a lens that is able of a focal lengh of 59mm.

And another question: Do you mind sharing your kowledge about nightshots with me? Cause i havent been able to make a good night shot up to now. The bright parts are always to bright, the dark parts are alwas to dark. The colours tend towards brown and the noise is terrible. How do you make this colorful and sharp nightpictures? --Simonizer (talk) 21:58, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I too would appreciate it if you could let us know about your methods. Muhammad 16:42, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm replying here since I got three people asking me question at same time :)
Massimo, I used a Canon 17-55mm (a lens I strongly recommend despite the high price) but converted the focal to it's 35mm equiv. It was actually 36mm. This answers the "sharp" point raised by Simonizer :)
When taking night shots I mostly take care of setting exposure correctly. This is true for any shot of course, but on a night shot, it's a little bit more tricky, because you can't really rely on your metering device. Set it to a mode where it will look the whole frame and you'll get something overexposed because a night shot has mainly dark parts, and the metering device tries to compensate this. In theory, I would use spot metering, and set the exposure from a bright part of the scene. My 400D doesn't have it, so I use "evaluative metering". It's still OK because I have found out that it takes in account mostly the central part of the frame. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've found it reliable enough until now. I don't know about Nikon metering system. Another way I've never explored would be to use an "whole frame evaluative metering" and compensate exposure (-1 or more).
I postprocess my night pictures, but not in unatural way I believe. I slightly brighten dark parts to compensate poor dynamic range from our cameras. It usually satisfies me much more than the picture I get out of the camera. I also set the color balance afterwards (hence the need to shoot RAW) and most of the times end up with a rather cool one (3500-4000°K I think, but I might go out of this range if I feel like so). This ensures me to often be satisfied with the colours.
In a more general point of view, it's better to set exposure from a bright area than opposite, because I've found out it's easier to pull details out of a dark part than out of a bright part, where it's simply gone.
As for the noise... I think it mostly depends on your hardware. Canon is renowned for their very nice sensor, but I think Nikon has closed the gap (if not taken the lead) in this field.
I think i've adressed all of your points Simonizer : Exposure, colours, sharpness and noise.
This is based on my own experience. I hope I'm not telling you wrong things and that this helps. Benh (talk) 18:24, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. One last question. How do you brighten the dark parts of the picture? Using the fill-in light of the raw converter, using the graduation curve or using a method called contrast maping? Or is there another possibility i dont know? --Simonizer (talk) 07:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Frac des Pays de la Loire

[edit]

Hi Benh, sorry to bother you with this, but I do not know anybody but you, who lives in France. I've got request from Attachée aux expositions of Frac des Pays de la Loire. He wants to put the video made out of my sunset mirage and green flash images in their exhibit. All my Wikipedia images are free, but they requested thousands of the additional, original sunset sequences images. It will result in a big extra work for me. Do you know anything about the place? They claim to be a non profit organization. Do you know, if it is correct info? Thank you for your time. If you have not heard anything about them, it's OK, please do not bother. I'll try one more time to look them up on the NET. I just went over your talk page and had a great laugh. I'm talking about sensl. I looked over his/her contributions. I love him/her. I know you would say that I love him/her because I am him/her. :-)Yes, he/she really voted almost as I would have voted, with a few small exceptions. Do you really believe I would have voted to oppose Image:2008-08-01 Solar eclipse progression.jpg as he/she did? Looks like you do not know me so well after all. Congrats with recent FP promotions! Well done. I know you want to ask me, if I'm coming back to Commons. No, I am not, not now and hopefully not ever. I only would rarely post a message, if I need to contact somebody from Commons as I'm doing this now.If you're to respond please respond here. I'll check on your response myself. Best.--Mbz1 (talk) 03:00, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Benh. BTW I believe you have a typo in the very first statement on your talk kage. It says: "I you have an account, I'll reply on your talk page." I believe it should say " If you have an account, I'll reply on your talk page." I love your current nimination. The view is great and the image is of very, very good quality.--Mbz1 (talk) 01:48, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seagull

[edit]

Don't worry. I understand perfectly 'no wow' votes. That's a personal perception and not arguable. Many voters thought it was good enough, I may retry again in the future when you are on holiday :-)). I only have some problem with attack votes, but that is another story ;-). Please keep voting the way you feel you have to. Lycaon (talk) 21:50, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
